Why Are Free & Fair Elections Important? Free and fair elections are the heartbeat of democracy — the mechanism by which citizens peacefully hold leaders accountable and make their voices heard. "Free" means every eligible citizen can vote without intimidation or suppression. "Fair" means every vote counts equally and results are accurate. When elections are compromised — through voter suppression, gerrymandering, or misinformation — democracy itself is on the ballot. Protecting elections isn't partisan. What Can I Do? Make a plan to vote in every election — local, state, and national. Check your registration, know your polling place, and bring a neighbor. Volunteer as a poll worker or election observer. Support organizations that fight voter suppression and protect voting rights. Push back on misinformation about elections — share accurate information from trusted sources. Advocate for ranked-choice voting, independent redistricting, and campaign finance reform.
